1953 Bentley 'R' Type Saloon Manual Gears " Price Reduction "
Much underrated these sports saloons were the original super saloon with a 4.5 litre 6 cylinder engine coupled with a 4 speed manual gearbox - even today they are more than capable to keep up with modern traffic and mid range torque makes them surprise many other motorists!!
This delightful example has been owned by only a few careful owners in the last 34 years and there is full records of all works carried out in this time, (which are so comprehensive that a trunk has to accommodate them) ,during which only 36.000 miles have been traveled
A rebuilt engine, clutch & radiator core by Hillier Hill Ltd only 22.000 miles ago
In 2007 - 2009 a further mechanical & interior restoration was carried out, with a photographic record
A complete suspension and braking system overhaul
Also a Continental high ratio rear axle installed for easier touring
Interior stripped out - veneers, carpets bulkhead
Leather was restored rather than replacing
Again during the last owners care all bills have been kept as well, although his required works have been rather less extensive, as would be expected
The main works during his tenure, except for routine servicing have been a head gasket replacement, an original radio upgraded with modern features and a full set of new tyres
The original semaphore indicators still work and for further safety modern indicators have been placed underneath the bumpers both front and back
A really charming car which we have used regularly since she has arrived with us
Starting on the button, hot or cold, she runs through the gears perfectly and touring on motorways is a doddle with the high ratio axle installed
Suspension is very compliant and the brakes pull up straight and true
Mechanically this beauty is as good as you get for 63 years of age
Paintwork has been changed over the years, for the original factory build records tell us that she was Masons Black with Tan interior originally
She is currently is Tudor over Shell Grey with grey hides and it would seem that this change was carried out prior to the 1980's
Having said that she shines up nicely with a good polish and sparkles in the sunshine
There is a ding on the rear bumper by the over rider - other than that she is remarkably unblemished
A Bentley we rather enjoy - and hope that you will too
